The Black Cats of Amherst is the story of a World War I ambulance unit that formed at Amherst College in June 1917, a few months after the United States joined the war. They trained in Allentown, PA and sailed to France in August. Driving Fiats and Ford Model T trucks, they served with several French army divisions the last year of the war.

Jim Hamilton authored the book The Black Cats of Amherst, the story of his grandfather’s service in this military unit. Through his research, Jim has put together a fascinating history of The Black Cats. Two of our Vero Beach alumni have a special connection to this topic. The fathers of Nick Evans '52, P'80,'85 and Don Riefler '49 participated in the Black Cats.

Sponsored by the Amherst Association of Vero Beach and made possible by Nick Evans '52, P'80,'85.

Please join us for this special event. Guests are welcome.
