Boston is a STEM-rich environment, and more than 700 Amherst alumni work or study in science, technology, engineering and math professions in the Boston area. Among you are leaders in the tech world, groundbreaking researchers, medical students, surgeons, engineers, economists, administrators, educators and more.
On October 10, 2019, please join our host, Dr. Gerald Fine ’80, P’12, director of Boston University’s Engineering Product Innovation Center, and other Amherst alumni in STEM for an evening of socializing, networking, faculty presentations and the latest information on STEM education. Mingle with Amherst faculty, staff from the Loeb Center for Career Exploration and Planning, and Catherine Epstein, provost and dean of the faculty.
Talk with the Amherst College Summer Science Undergraduate Research Fellows (SURF) as they present their research findings during the reception.

Event Schedule

5:00 p.m. Registration opens; 30-minute optional tour of the Boston University Engineering Product Innovation Center (EPIC) with its director, Dr. Gerald Fine ’80, P’12. EPIC is a 15,000-square-foot training facility. Tour is limited to 25 participants.

5:45 p.m. Reception and networking with other alumni and Loeb Center staff, view the SURF posters.

6:30 p.m. Welcome by Dr. Gerald Fine ’80, P’12.

6:35 p.m. A conversation with William A. Loinaz, professor of physics and chair of the health professions committee at the Loeb Center for Career Exploration and Planning, about the liberal arts as rich and meaningful preparation for health professions.

6:50 p.m. Emily Griffen, director of the Loeb Center for Career Exploration and Planning, will discuss opportunities available to STEM students such as mentoring, internships and career exploration activities and the ways alumni can get involved.

7:00 p.m. Catherine Epstein, provost and dean of the faculty, provides an overview of STEM at Amherst College.

7:15 p.m. Return to reception for more networking and conversation. Take the opportunity to talk with SURF students as they present their posters.
