Invites you to participate in the

Gifts For The Homeless (GFTH) Clothing Drive

Over the years, the Amherst Association of Washington, D.C. has participated in the annual Gifts For The Homeless (GFTH) clothing drive. It's that time again. GFTH is a non-profit, wholly volunteer-run organization that serves the homeless of the Washington, D.C. area. For nearly 25 years, Gifts for the Homeless has been collecting and distributing used clothing to the homeless in the greater D.C. area in our effort to "Make the Winter a Little Warmer" for the less fortunate.  The need has never been greater than it is this year.

There are two important ways you can help:

Amherst again hopes to provide volunteers to assist at the clothing drive. GFTH is seeking volunteers to sort and distribute used clothing on Friday, December 3rd and Saturday and Sunday, December 4th and 5th on the D Street Lobby level at the Portals III located on D Street, SW between 12th and 13th Streets, SW. They would especially welcome volunteers on Friday afternoon. Minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult. GFTH also needs many drivers to complete deliveries to all shelters. Volunteers should return the Volunteer Sign-Up Form by November 30 to Cecile Patterson at the address indicated on the form.

Donations may be dropped off at the location specified below on Friday, December 3rd. In addition to kids (including infants) and adult clothes (business clothes are very much needed) and outerwear (especially gloves and hats), GFTH is always looking for shoes, boots, sleeping bags, sheets, pillows, blankets, and towels. This is a great opportunity to take the Thanksgiving weekend to clean out your closets and make a tax-deductible donation at the same time (a blank receipt is attached). The clothing drive takes place on:

Friday, December 3rd
Saturday, December 4th
Sunday, December 5th

The collection site is PORTALS III
D Street between 12th Street and 13th Street SW
(near the Smithsonian and L'Enfant Plaza Metro stops - a map is posted on the Website).
Drop-off  8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Folks who have participated in past years will tell you that we've had a lot of fun, and have met and become friends with others in the DC community. Kids can earn hours toward community service requirements. Volunteers dig into the bags of donated clothing and separate them by gender and type. The donations are then bagged, labeled, and arranged for delivery. Donuts, bagels and coffee and a pizza lunch are served.

To volunteer, contact Cecile Patterson by phone (202) 371-7695 or email,
