In conjunction with Amherst Caring Together (ACT), a community service and engagement program for Amherst Associations, our association is partnering with UR Success to transform an unused residential backyard in the King neighborhood of the near eastside (south of Alberta) in Portland into a community garden plot that will help to provide meals to those in need in our community.
UR Success is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to identify individual youths (junior high school and high school students, many of whom who have broken relationships with their parents) who have shown great potential for development, and then to introduce the youths to responsible adult role models. UR Success has recruited about ten youths to spend a Saturday in April working without pay on the community garden project; the youths' compensation will be their opportunity to work alongside Amherst alumni as peers to achieve a common goal, a rare chance to interact one-on-one with well-educated adults who are not authority figures.
We are hoping to match the number of youth volunteers with an equal number of Amherst volunteers. There will be some light physical work (placing railroad ties, rolling wheelbarrows, hoeing ground, etc.) involved, but appropriate tasks can be found for Amherst family members from about age 12 upward.
