Sweeney Todd, Stephen Sondheim's virtuosic musical masterpiece based on the book by Hugh Wheeler, tells the macabre story of a murderous barber who vows revenge on those who destroyed his family. Set in 19th century England, the musical first opened on Broadway in 1979 and won eight Tony Awards (including Best Musical).
One of the New York Philharmonic's signature events of the season, Sweeney Todd stars operatic bass-baritone and Grammy winner Bryn Terfel, Oscar winner Emma Thompson, and Tony Award winner Christian Borle in what is being touted as a "sure-to-be-rousing" production. Sondheim's music is "complex, intricate, and full of rich harmonies" and the New York Philharmonic is sure to convey the "artistic energy, creative personality, and plain excitement in Sweeney Todd" (New York Times).
