Amherst celebrates two of the most recent alumni to be named MacArthur Foundation Fellows: Dr. Kellie Jones '81, H'18, the Hans Hofmann Professor of Modern Art in the departments of Art History and Archaeology and African American and African Diaspora Studies at Columbia University and Thomas W. Mitchell '87, professor at Texas A&M University School of Law, join us for a conversation.

Dr. Jones’s research interests include African American and African Diaspora artists, Latinx and Latin American Artists and issues in contemporary art and museum theory. Dr. Jones, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, has also received awards for her work from the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research, Harvard University and Creative Capital | Warhol Foundation. She was named a MacArthur Foundation Fellow in 2016.
Professor Mitchell is a national expert on property issues facing disadvantaged communities who has published leading scholarly works addressing these matters. He is nationally known for his property law reform and policy work on behalf of disadvantaged communities and farmers—communities and farmers that are disproportionately Black. State and federal elected officials and policymakers often consult with

Professor Mitchell about possible legislative and policy solutions to help disadvantaged property owners and farmers. In 2021, he received the Howard University Award for Distinguished Postgraduate Achievement and, in 2020, he was named a MacArthur Foundation Fellow.
