The Office of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (ODEI) at Amherst College works collaboratively to support and sustain the growth of a just, equitable, vibrant, and intellectually challenging educational environment, and a culture of critical and compassionate campus engagement. Through understanding, mutual consideration, and unconditional respect, we work to ensure that all members of the College community are afforded the opportunity to reach their full potential as active participants in our global society.

Primary Areas of Focus

While advancing diversity and inclusion covers a wide range of work that affects every facet of the Amherst College community, ODEI’s four primary areas of focus include:

  • Building a Thriving Community
  • Bridging Theory & Practice
  • Inclusive Recruitment and Retention
  • Systemic and Progressive Change

Diversity is about difference—differences we all carry, differences between and among us, but also the differences within identity groups and individuals. A community that takes the time to explore and appreciate the ways in which we live in the world and are affected by it is a community willing to do the work of understanding and change.
—Norm J. Jones, Ph.D., Chief Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Officer
