Summer Research Training Institute (Before Junior Year)
Dates for 2021: June 7-July 16th
With the support of faculty mentors and the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF) staff, the Mellon Mays Summer Research Training Institute provides new cohort of Mellon Mays Fellows with essential tools to engage in rigorous independent research in their various fields of study as they begin to explore careers in the professoriate. During this time, each fellow works one-on-one with a faculty mentor, conducting original research. The program’s research training activities include workshops, lectures, seminars, conferences, library tutorials and collaborative learning. Mellon Mays Fellows live, work together and participate in peer review sessions to enhance their communication, writing and analytical skills essential for a rigorous training in graduate studies.
Summer Research (Before Senior Year)
Using the skills learned at the Summer Research Training Institute, Mellon Mays Fellows are required to continue to work on their research projects under the supervision of their faculty mentors. In consultation with the faculty mentors, Mellon Mays Fellows are strongly encouraged to take advantage of archival research and fieldwork experience, as well as visits to libraries and museums. Mellon Mays Fellows are expected to transform their research projects into senior honors theses or independent research papers.
