Walter Donovan ’85, appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2011, is the chief investment officer and senior managing director of Putnam Investments in Boston.
Donovan graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and then double-majored in history and political science, and also played football, at Amherst. He began his finance career as a municipal bond trader and underwriter for the investment bank now known as Salomon Brothers before he moved on to Merrill Lynch Capital Markets, where he was a director on the corporate debt trading desk. Starting in 1995, he held a series of important positions at Fidelity Investments, ultimately becoming president of its Equity Division in 2007. He joined Putnam as CIO two years later.
Donovan is a trustee of Boston’s Cathedral High School and at Phillips Exeter Academy. He co-founded the Mehr Scholarship Fund at Amherst and founded the Richard M. Morante Scholarship Fund at Exeter, in addition to supporting several financial aid funds for inner-city high school students.
