Over the summer, the college’s Center for Community Engagement funded public service internships for 150 Amherst students. Those students interned in 22 countries, 17 states and Washington, D.C. Some worked in the Pioneer Valley for organizations such as the Amherst Survival Center and A Better Chance. Others headed to major U.S. cities, working for the American Cancer Society in Chicago; the Washington, D.C., Public Defender Service; the Darfur Coalition of San Francisco; and the Urban Justice Center in New York City. Still others traveled outside of the United States, interning at such organizations as the Asociacion Civil Sumate in Caracas, Venezuela; Counseling-Research and Life Psychology in Hanoi, Vietnam; and Simply Smiles in Oaxaca, Mexico. Now back at Amherst, several of the interns sent us photos from their summer travels.
