Richard C. Forman '36
Dick Forman died in Miami, FL, on December 6, 2006. He came to Amherst from Alpena, MI; this seemed like a long distance back in 1932. He began at once to pursue the rigorous and time-consuming premedical program. Dick joined Chi Psi and was the fraternity’s treasurer.
After Amherst he received his medical degree in obstetrics and gynecology from the University of Rochester in 1940. That same year he married Jean Hamm. Dick was one of the founders of Doctor’s Hospital in Coral Gables, FL. He did important work in the field of infertility and was a founding member of the American College of OB/GYN and the Florida OB/GYN Society. He was assistant clinical professor of OB/GYN for the University of Miami in Coral Gables from 1954 to 1960. He was listed in the Leaders in American Science and in the American Men of Medicine in 1961.
Dick had wide interest in community projects during his practice in Miami and was twice nominated as “Outstanding Citizen of Dade County.” He was a founding member of the Coral Reef and the University of Miami Yacht Clubs. In 1967, he and Jean moved to Longboat Key, FL, where he was a member of the Spanish Main Yacht Club, the Key Royal Golf Club and the Gulf Shrine Club of which was president in 1973.
But there was more to life than hard work. During retirement he and Jean spent five years living on their boat and exploring the West Indies, and he was also very familiar with all the Bahamas islands. He and Jean were frequent competitors in the International Light Tackle Fishing Association. What friends will remember most about Dick was his enthusiasm for yachting and fishing and his spirited jitterbugging with his wife.
Dick is survived by his daughter, Beverly Root; two granddaughters, Deborah Cloud and Michelle Root, and two great-granddaughters.
