 In Memory

Raised in St. Louis, Fred ended up in Florida, where he became an active and esteemed member of the Naples community; he died there on Dec. 18, 2009.

Majoring in mathematics, Fred was a member of Delta Upsilon played squash and was an associate class agent.

His service in WWII started in the Army Air Corps, during an active aspect of which, in his words, he was in a control tower, “screaming at flying cadets to lower their wheels before attempting to land ...” His next military step was Officer Candidate School, which “prepared” him for tours of duty in anti-aircraft, as an instructor in communications and as an information and education officer in Japan.

Decommissioned, he returned, complete with wife Jane to raise their family of two girls and a boy in St. Louis. Fred, with his brother Ernst, operated the family sporting goods business until moving to Naples in 1973.

The Schlutzes spent most of a year motor yachting from Michigan to Florida via Lake Michigan, down the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers and across the Gulf of Mexico. They finally found their place in Naples, and Fred, in his active form of retirement, worked for many organizations to extend and improve the community: Habitat for Humanity, YMCA, Rotary International, commodore of the Naples Yacht Club and the Royal Poinciana Country Club, where he played with his buddies what he claimed was “bad” golf. He also worked as a realtor.

Jane and Fred had been married 65 years when she died, also in 2009. Survivors include a daughter, a son and five grandchildren.
