Coming to Amherst via Deerfield, Harry had been a genial member of Phi Kappa Psi and of the College as a whole.

Harry foreshadowed his commercial acumen by majoring in economics and mathematics and by working on the business side of The Student, of which he became manager in his senior year. He was a member of the tennis team.

During WWII, he served in the Pacific theater, becoming a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Returned to civilian life, Harry founded and was president of H.A. Trautmann & Company and Willow Press, a printing corporation.

His chief outdoor avocation was that of an avid fly fisherman; in pursuit of its delights, he traveled the world. Indoors, he was a dedicated player of bridge and chess.

Harry was an enthusiastic alumnus, spending time and effort supporting the College and its activities. Showing that Amherst was an important factor in the life of his family is the fact that a brother, a nephew and a grandson are alumni.

He leaves his wife of 64 years, Catherine Cole Trautmann, a daughter, two sons and five grandsons; also a brother and that sibling’s three children.
