John died in his 97th year Feb. 1, 2015, in the Juniper Medical Center of Juno Beach, Fla.
Born in Gloucester, Mass., he attended Beacon Preparatory School before entering Amherst in 1936. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta, cross country (1), C.A. (3, 4) and the Pre-Medical Club (1, 2, 3, 4).
After graduating from Amherst, he was awarded his medical degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University.
In November 1943 he was commissioned by the Naval Reserve. Assigned to Naval Amphibious Operations in the Pacific Theatre, he received campaign ribbons for the American area, the Philippine Liberation and the Bronze Combat Star (Okinawa). John was in Hiroshima a month following the atomic bomb and was on Ie Shima when Ernie Pyle was killed by machine gun fire.
John took his medical residency at Millard Fillmore Hospital in July 1946. He was a doctor of internal medicine and became professor emeritus of medicine at the University of Buffalo in May 1987, which was also the year of his retirement.
Dusty was the quintessential physician and man. He had a keen interest in people and is remembered by his deeds and personality.
John’s first wife, Lois Grimm Dustin, died in 1994 in Juno Beach, Fla. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Gropper Dustin; two sons, William Knight Dustin ’66 and Peter Grimm Dustin ’67; daughter Deborah Brooks; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
