Robert Irwin Henkel died on Feb. 11.

A history major, Bob received the Walker Prize and the ’40 numerals for freshman football. He was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon. At the University of Chicago he studied business administration. After Winnetka, Ill., he resided on the North Shore of Chicago (Evanston, Wilmette, Kenilworth and Lake Forest). He was a captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. A successful businessman with Wallace Press from 1946 to 1960, he was owner and president of Johnson & Quin from 1960 to 1989.

Bob’s wife, Marie Ferwerd, predeceased him after 62 years of marriage. They had two sons, three daughters, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

 A loving husband and father, Bob was modest about his successes and was a good friend to many.

50th Reunion

Life has been very good to me. Even though there have been some difficult times, I have been fortunate in many different ways. First and most important, I met my wife in January 1942 in Washington, D.C. We married a year later on the day I received my commission from OCS.

We have four children, all married, with six grandchildren plus two more by marriage. Our son is the oldest. He joined my company about twelve years ago, bought it from me last year and is doing a super job. The other three are all girls; two in our area and one in Fort Worth, who is married to a Delta pilot.

We returned to the Chicago area after I was discharged from the Air Force in April 1946. For the next 14 years, I was associated with Wallace Press (now Wallace Computer Services) where my dad had been associated his entire business career. I was Vice-President & Secretary when I resigned in 1960 to become associated with a smaller firm, Johnson & Quin, as Executive Vice President. This proved to be an excellent move. I was able to buy the company in 1974. The company is in a specialized part of the printing industry and has grown steadily with much of the growth coming in recent years. I retired the end of 1988 having reached the age of three score and ten.

Outside activities have taken up my time after family and business. I have been a church elder and trustee, an officer in the Printing Industry of Illinois, trustee of Lawrence Hall Youth Services for 19 years, trustee of the Presbyterian Home for 7 years, President of the Amherst Club of Chicago, and am currently Secretary-Treasurer of the Amherst Club of the Palm Beaches.

We enjoy golf and travel and have been able to spend a lot of time on both. I have been very active at Sunset Ridge Country Club where I served a number of offices including two years as President. We also belong to Tequesta Country Club in Florida. I should be a much better golfer being able to play year around but somehow or other it doesn't work out that way.

Amherst has been a most important factor in my life since the fall of 1936. I have been able to keep in touch with a number of classmates while on business or vacation. I always look forward to seeing members of 1940 and we are now eagerly awaiting our big 50th reunion.
