HUGH JAMES McLANE, M.D. ’44

Hugh died peacefully at his Laurel Lake Retirement Community home in Hudson, Ohio, at age 85, on Jan. 11, 2009.

Hugh attended Amherst College for undergraduate studies and received a degree in medicine from Yale Univ. He then served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp in Berlin, Germany, from 1947-49. After serving overseas, he completed his residency in internal medicine at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Mich., and became a fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Hugh practiced internal medicine in Fond du Lac, Wis., for over 40 years until his retirement in 1992. He served as president of the Fond du Lac Medical Society and president of the Wisconsin Heart Association.

Hugh was a strong supporter of music and the arts, and an advocate for nature conservation. He played soccer in school, and throughout his life, he loved watching sports. Hiking and canoeing were among his favorite pastimes. He was also an avid traveler.

Hugh married Margaret Osborne in 1947. Together they have three daughters and three grandchildren. Hugh and Margaret celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary last summer.
