Joseph Anthony Anderson '44


Joseph Anthony Anderson (Joe) died on January 14, 2007, in Stony Brook, NY, from the effects of a fall in December 2006.  His immediate family survives him, including his daughter, Helen (Phinney); his grandchildren, Arthur and Brooke; and his son-in-law, Terry, all of Dedham, MA.  In addition to his daughter’s family, he is also survived by his brother, Steve, of Mystic, CT.  

Since 2002, Joe and his wife, Martha (deceased in June 2006), lived at Peconic Landing, an assisted-living facility in Greenport, NY.  Prior to Peconic Landing, Joe and Martha were residents of Bridgehampton, NY, where they lived from 1978-2002.  Joe was an avid contributor in Bridgehampton, running several local improvement and non-profit groups in his retirement.  He was also a loyal member of St. Ann’s Episcopal Church in Bridgehampton, serving on the vestry and the usher’s guild.  He was a member of the Brideghampton Club and enjoyed many years of golf, tennis and platform tennis.  

Joe retired in 1978 after many years as senior vice president of the Merrill Anderson Agency, which specialized in bank and financial services advertising and was founded by his father Merrill Anderson, also an Amherst graduate.  He was also a US Navy veteran serving as a pilot and trainer during World War II.  Joe’s first wife, Frances Brooke (formerly of Norfolk, VA), died in New York in 1974.
