GRANT MAYNARD FORD ’45
Grant Ford died at his home in Loveland, Colo., on Nov. 11, 2008, at the age of 84. Born in Wausau, Wis., he graduated from Wausau High School before enrolling at Amherst. His college years were interrupted by World War II during which he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army 10th Mountain Division. He then returned to Amherst, graduating in 1948. While there, Grant served as captain of the football and ski teams and vice president of the student council.
In 1953, Grant married Laura “Tottie” Wright, and they moved to Loveland where Grant worked as a life underwriter for Equitable Life Insurance Co.
The leadership roles honed at Amherst continued and expanded when in time he was elected president of the following organizations: United Way, Chamber of Commerce, Loveland Development Fund, Rotary Club, Habitat for Humanity and Larimer County Association of Life Underwriters.
Grant was also active in his church, All Saints Episcopal, as senior warden and finance committee chairman. He was an outdoorsman in an outdoors state. At the age of 73, he was inducted into the Colorado Ski Hall of Fame, an honor of which he was deservedly proud.
He is survived by his wife, Tottie, after 53 years of marriage and was preceded in death by his son, David, and his daughter, Anne. To Grant’s family, our Class extends its sincere condolences.
