Cyril Archibald Johnson passed away on April 26, 2010, in Baltimore, Md., following a stroke. He was 83.

Archie, as he was affectionately known, was born in Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa. He attended school in Monrovia, and graduated from the College of West Africa High School in 1944.

In 1945, he traveled to the U.S. and matriculated at Amherst College. While at Amherst, he majored in biology, was a member of the Lord Jeff Club, the Political Union, the Outing Club and the Men’s Soccer Team. He received his M.D. from the American University, Beirut, in 1955.

He then returned to the U.S. to work on a specialization in obstetrics and gynecology. While doing his residency at Bellevue Hospital, New York University, he married Alice Perry of East Orange, N.J.

In 1959 Archie returned to Liberia and went to work for the Liberian government as an OB-GYN surgeon at Maternity Center, where he twice served as medical director.  In 1961, he opened his clinic at his private medical practice. During his many years of service as a beloved physician, he delivered more than 25,000 babies!

Archie worked tirelessly to improve the state of health, particularly that of women and children, in Liberia. In addition to his private practice and government work, he also served on the clinical faculty at the A.M. Dogliotti College of Medicine of the University of Liberia. He was a founding member of the Liberian Medical and Dental Association, an active fellow of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) and a founding member of the Family Planning Association of Liberia.

In 1990, the Liberian civil war forced him to move to the U.S. where he lived in Silver Spring, Md.

He is survived by his loving wife, Alice Perry Johnson; their three children, Lawrence Riad, Wayne Akiwamwa and Patricia Omodele; and three grandchildren.
