WILLIAM H. KING ’49

Bill entered Amherst in the Spring of 1946 after spending three years in the U.S. Army Air Force. He was a member of Kappa Theta and graduated in June 1949, Phi Beta Kappa. An early contact with the General Electric Company led him to join that organization in July 1949, starting a long and distinguished career lasting over 40 years.

After starting in the chemical and plastics division in Pittsfield, Mass., he moved on to numerous assignments in Europe, Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. The South America experienced was full of episodes of political unrest, requiring the family to move around the various countries as events allowed.

Since retiring from GE in December 1986, he and Peggy have enjoyed life split between homes in Maine and Florida. Please go to the college website (www.amherst.edu/alumni) and click on the In Memory button to view a more detailed account of Bill’s life.
