In Memory

Arthur H. Lockard of Warwick, NY, formerly of New York City, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2008, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Warwick, NY. He was eighty-one years old. He was born December 30, 1926, at the Sloan Hospital in New York City, the son of Charles and Elizabeth Hunt Lockard. He was married to the late Betsy Eastment Lockard, who passed away in 2005, in 1988.

Artie grew up in Glen Ridge, NJ, and graduated from Glen Ridge High School before coming to Amherst in the fall of 1946. He served with the US Navy in the Signal Corps during World War II. While at Amherst, he was a member of DKE fraternity. He was the owner and president of Art Lockard Inc., an advertising company in New York City, before retiring to Warwick, NY. There he enjoyed the countryside, tennis, swimming, and his Golden Retrievers. He also loved snow skiing and sunny beaches.

For our 50th Reunion book, Artie wrote a singularly honest and open story about his life after Amherst, including his bout with alcoholism and about his winning that conflict. He told dramatically, and absolutely openly, of the consequences of his struggle—loss of jobs, family, and friends. After 1971, things changed radically and positively for him—a new business, many reconciliations with family and friends, and a new marriage to his beloved Betsy. It was evident at our 50th Reunion, his first time back at Amherst, that Artie, in the final analysis, had not lost his Amherst friends.

We welcomed him and Betsy warmly and were very glad to see him in such fine fettle, with his great smile and laugh still intact. Artie had been a friend of Bill W. of AA for thirty-seven years and had brought strength and hope to all with whom he came in contact.

His big smile and warm hugs were his signature and will be greatly missed. He was very active in his local community: helping the local farmers market, farmland preservation, and many animal rescue organizations. He is survived by his three children, Elizabeth Lockard of Honolulu, HI; James Lockard of London, England; and Linda Lockard of Los Angeles, CA; a sister, Diana Lockard of Claremont, CA; grandchildren Mia, Katie, Amelia, and Kit. Artie—your Amherst friends will miss you.
