In Memory

Brad Bond passed away Feb. 8, 2014.

Brad was one of our World War II vets, having served in the Army’s Fourth infantry division, and saw action in the European Theater.

He comes from an Amherst family, with a brother, Roger Bacon Bond ’44, now deceased. Before Amherst, he attended Deerfield Academy, and after college he attended the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, where he received his M.B.A. While at Amherst, he joined Kappa Theta and the Glee Club.

Brad worked for the New England Mutual Life Insurance Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1989 as director of underwriting—one of the most responsible and important positions in the life insurance industry. In our 50th reunion book he mentioned that he felt the history, English and economics courses he took at Amherst, and the liberal arts education, helped him in his career, something that many people these days do not agree with.

In later years, he moved to beautiful Centerville, Mass., on Cape Cod, and also became one of the Vero Beach, Fla., crowd. He participated in and loved golf, tennis and sailing. When these were not available he spent his time supporting the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots.

His wife of 61 years, Helen March Bond (Simmons ’52), said they met because her brother Phil was Brad’s roommate. Brad’s quick wit and sense of humor were some of his best attributes. This was reiterated by many classmates and others. He was a wonderful family man.

Besides his wife, Helen, he leaves son William, daughter-in-law Isabel and two grandchildren in Escondido Calif., and daughter Louise Wing, son-in-law Bryce and a granddaughter in Hanover, N.H.

He must have loved being with them because he often commented, “They are a wonder!” Many people might say the same about him!
