In Memory

Brooks Robinson Major Sr., of Chestertown, Md., passed quietly on Dec. 19, 2013. Born in 1928 in Bronxville, N.Y., he was the son of the late Clarence Major and Rachel Renshaw and younger brother to the cherished, late Richard Major ’42.

Adored and adoring husband of Carol Renfrew Major; father of Paul, Brooks Jr. and Richard II ’75; and proud grandfather of Tyler, Sean, Naomi, Hayden and Brooks III, he was a profoundly decent man who loved his dear Carol—his high school sweetheart and wife of 63 years—afresh each day.

My father took seriously the opportunities for good in his long associations with the International Order of Odd Fellows (Towson Lodge #79) and the Humane Society of Kent County, and he liked the great tenors, books about the sea, children, dogs and especially you and me.

Self-effacing holder of multiple degrees, he found his calling at midlife as an administrator of chronic care hospitals, where he delighted in the care he devoted to residents and received modestly the regard they returned. He served as executive director first of Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital and then of Keswick Multi-Care Center, both in Baltimore.

His brothers and time at Theta Xi remained among his happiest experiences and fondest memories. I met only a few of you, but feel a debt to you all.

There was a private service at his gravesite.

Richard R. Major II ’75
