Conrad died peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, at his daughter's home in Goode, Va. Conrad grew up in Sewickley, Pa., and he served in the 376th Infantry during World War II where he was awarded the Purple Heart.

After his military service, Conrad attended Amherst College, where he was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity. After graduating from Amherst, he graduated from the Wharton School of the Univ. of Pennsylvania. He worked as an assistant vice president at Mellon Bank, N.A., until his retirement.

He was a devout Episcopalian. He was an amateur ornithologist who enjoyed hiking and counting birds until the time of his death. Conrad is survived by his three daughters, Nina (Robert) Burke of Wrightsville Beach, N.C.; Elizabeth (Robin) Wood of Goode, Va.; and Kimberly Mahan of Salem, Va. He is also survived by his three grandchildren, Georgia and Ethan Wood and James Mahan.
