In Memory

It was reported to the college that our classmate Dick DenUyl had passed away on June 2, 2011. He was born in Detroit, Mich., on April 4, 1929.

In his freshman and sophomore years, he was one of the “North Dorm” crowd, joining in the group activities and always remembered as having a great smile on his face. He joined Chi Psi, but then his Amherst days were cut short; he transferred to Michigan State and graduated in their hotel and hospitality program.

From that time on, he spent most of his years in the “lodging business.” He was employed in many properties as a manager, including a stint as the resident manager of the renowned Camelback Inn, some Sheraton properties and, then back in Michigan, at the Macatawa Inn and various steak restaurants. He also was director of Point West Inc. and served as chairman of various associations in lodging and restaurants, both in Arizona and back in his home city of Holland, Mich. With the Dutch name, that was very appropriate.

He married Patty in September 1973 and previously was married in 1955 to Kay, mother of Marjorie, Richard, Leslie and Jason.

Dick spent the last five years of his life living in Oregon, near some of his children. His surviving children are Marjorie, Richard Jr., Leslie, Jason, Cory, Abby and Mia.

Our thanks to Bob Steketee ’50 for his contribution.
