In Memory

Tom Darsie died on July 21, 2008, in Carmel, CA, at the age of seventy-nine. His health had steadily declined over the past year. Yet his sense of humor stayed with him.

Tom was the son of John and Mary Darsie and grew up in Plainfield, NJ.  He graduated from Taft School in Watertown, CT, in 1946 and entered Amherst that fall. Upon graduation, Tom went on to attend Harvard Law School.  It wasn’t long before he discovered that law was not his calling. He decided then to enlist in the United States Navy.

In time, he met Cynthia Murphy, a Pan Am flight attendant, from Brooklyn, NY.  A short time later, they were married and moved to Carmel, CA.  Tom had a boundless affection for Carmel and its residents.  He was just as enthusiastic in sharing his detailed recollections of dozens of people he had met and enjoyed throughout his life.

Tom was an avid tennis and squash player. He also loved Dixieland jazz—the only real jazz—and its musicians.

He is survived by his wife, Cynthia, and his sister, Mary Darsie Alexander.

Tom had much to give and gave much to all who knew him. He will be missed.
