In Memory

Bob Coldwell passed away in Vero Beach, Fla., on June 23, 2011. He had been confined to a nursing home there for some time.

Bob was raised in Bronxville, N.Y., and came to Amherst, having been separated from the U.S. Army. He served from 1945 to 1947 and was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne, having many jumps to his credit.

While at Amherst, he was suddenly recalled to active duty when the Korean police action began and was unable to graduate with us but did so subsequently in 1952, after his discharge.

Bob received an MBA from Wharton in 1954 and worked for many years in industrial management for such firms as Westinghouse, American Standard and ITT with international assignments in Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia and elsewhere. He was briefly married with no children.

He retired to a condo in Vero Beach in 1988 and for many years was a habitué of the Ocean Grill, a noted restaurant on the water. Though he was a teetotaler, he had a special place to sit, a la Norm in Cheers, and became part of the Ocean Grill family. It was there that Lee Shaw ’51, George Carpenter ’51, Paul Coon ’51 and others would meet him on occasion to thrash out old times. His health began to deteriorate early this century with a variety of maladies, and the nursing home was his last stop.

Despite his infirmities, he was cheerful and witty, and our meetings with him left us refreshed. He will be missed.

Paul Coon ’51
