Carlisle “Sandy” Knowlton died early the morning of Jan. 29, 2013, after suffering a fall. Sandy was born in Kansas City, Mo., and graduated from Bronxville (N.Y.) High School in 1948, after which he joined the great Class of 1952. After college, he proudly served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1952 until 1954, mainly in Reykjavik, Iceland. He then moved to Glendale, Ohio, where he worked for Champion Paper Co. (now International Paper Co.). Since 1977, Sandy had been a principal owner of Beard Lumber Co. in Old Saybrook, Conn.
While at Amherst, he was house manager of the Beta Theta Pi house, where he seemed to be everywhere, keeping things running smoothly the rest of his college days. For the better part of two years, he pursued the love of his life, Janie, whom he married shortly after graduation.
Sandy was a sailor and gardener and a great lover of English literature, with a particular fondness for metaphysical poets and P. G. Wodehouse. He was also a snappy dresser and was known for his dry sense of humor and as a collector of handsome bow ties. During the summer, he often vacationed in East Penobscot Bay, Maine, where he often visited with Fred Marston’52, becoming a part of the Amherst community in that area. He was always very pleasant with a wry sense of humor and an easygoing personality.
He was very proud of the fact that two sons went to Amherst, Scott ’81 and Chris ’84 (who is married to Sally deGozzaldi ’84).
He and Janie had four children, who survive him. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren, who are described as considerate, kind and accomplished in the finest way, taking off after their grandfather.
