Fred Sholtz lost his battle with cancer on Nov. 29, 2009. He enjoyed a tremendous career while simultaneously pursuing extracurricular activities. His energy level was the tops. He was always focused on being the very best. For those of us who knew him well, Fred was fun, creative, bright and sometimes a tad liberal.
Fred’s girl was always Sally. They married his junior year. Fred went into the New York financial business world with Chemical Bank, General Foods, Morgan Stanley and Mitchell and Associates. When he was not riding his motorcycle, Fred was involved in the boating business and was an avid deep water sailor. In 1977, Fred was chairman of the New York Yacht club race committee for the America’s Cup. That was the year Ted Turner won.
Fred’s passion for art inspired him to start a world-class collection of modern art, which included Jasper Johns, Stella and Albers. Fred went on to become CEO of Sotheby’s International.
Fred and Sally vacationed in Naples, Fla., during the winter months and Fred’s focus turned to photography. His camera lens skills provided professional grade photos of Alaska, Africa, New England, Western deserts, unique birds and animals of all species. Golf became Fred’s newest passion during his 60s and 70s. Naturally, Fred’s goal was to win.
Fred and Sally had three children, Peter, Sarah (Dewar) and Brad, as well as eight grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Andrew ’50. Hundreds of friends and family agree; if we close our eyes, we can see him just down the road or around the corner.
