In Memory

Harold “Hal” Bohmer died on Dec. 29, 2014, at his home in Tucson, Ariz. While Hal entered Amherst with us in the class of 1952, he left to serve four years with the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict, before returning to Amherst to graduate in 1958.

Hal was born in Northampton and attended Williston Academy. Following Amherst, he earned both an M.S. and a Ph.D. in geology at the University of Cincinnati (where he was awarded two National Science Foundation fellowships), after which he worked for PPG Industries for 34 years. Among the highlights of his career were expeditions to Sierra Leone and Greenland.

In 2002 he and his wife, Cynthia, retired to Tucson, where he enjoyed many adventures with his children and grandchildren. Among other family members, he was predeceased by his brother, the Rev. Karl Bohmer ’47, who died in 1998. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.
