James Arthur Carty '52

Jim and his wife Dorothy were at our 55th Reunion last June, in high spirits and apparent good health. But in August Jim was unexpectedly diagnosed with cancer. Surgery was not successful, and he died December 18, 2007.

Jim grew up in Detroit, where he graduated from the Cooley High School.  At Amherst he played football, sang first tenor in the glee club and the chapel choir, worked on SABRINA, majored in American Studies, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He was also a member of Phi Delta Theta, where I was one of his roommates.

Jim always wore a kind, fun-loving smile. In our senior year we traveled together to usher at a former roommate’s wedding. This turned out to be a Philadelphia mainline affair where we were both a little out of our element, but it was fun and games all the way. (Our attempts to disable the getaway car did not succeed.)

After Amherst, Jim returned to Michigan and earned his MBA at the Univ. of Michigan business school. He then made his career as a partner in the Detroit office of the global management consulting, technology services, and outsourcing firm now called Accenture.

He and Dorothy married in 1955 and ultimately settled in Grosse Pointe Woods, where they raised a son and three daughters, who in turn gave them nine grandchildren. Jim was an avid skier and traveler as well as an ardent family man. And he sang first tenor from 1992 on in the choral group of the Senior Men’s Club of Grosse Pointe.

Jim will be missed by many, and his Amherst friends join in extending our deepest sympathy to Dorothy and her family.
