John Hale Holdsworth '52

After a long and difficult illness, John Holdsworth died at a nursing home in Jaffrey, NH, on October 5, 2006.  His home was in nearby Rindge, NH, where he and his wife, Shirley, lived at “Hale-O-Hill,” the family’s summer home, after John’s retirement.

John was born on June 16, 1930, and grew up in Winchester, MA, where he attended high school with three future college classmates—Max Keeney, Dick Kugler, and Ed Shaw.  At Amherst, John was a member of the Chi Phi fraternity, earned his “A” as a member of the crew team, played the clarinet in the College band, sang in the Glee Club, and served as treasurer for the College radio station, WAMF.

After graduating from college, John went through the Naval OCS program at Newport, RI, and served as a naval officer for the next three years.  Following this military service, he attended Harvard Business School and, after graduating, served as a CPA with Lybrand, Ross Bros, and Montgomery for twelve years prior to opening his own CPA practice in Boston in 1972.

For most of his working career John and Shirley lived in Lexington, MA, where he became deeply involved in community affairs.  As a CPA, he was a natural choice of many organizations to serve as treasurer, and among his most treasured positions was serving as treasurer for the National Figure Skating Association and as treasurer and trustee of the Cathedral in the Pines, a magnificent wooded sanctuary in Rindge.

Besides Shirley, who has long been a well known figure skating judge, John leaves a daughter, Nancy Moore, who is a veterinarian in Temple, NH; two sons, Henry, a wildlife photographer living in Wilson, WY, and William, a motion picture crew member living in West Hills, CA; five grandchildren; and a brother, David, living in Green Village, NJ.
