After a stint in the US Army, he went to McGraw Hill where he began his career in selling advertising for technical magazines. As his career developed, he moved from McGraw Hill to Taylor Publishing, and from there to district manager for EEM. Ian specialized in selling advertising to international electronic technology magazines.

He was an enthusiastic horseman and a cowboy at heart. Ian died suddenly at his ranch in Santa Clarita, CA on November 13, 2002. His travels in pursuit of his job took him to many places in the west. His children, Bill, Missy, and Judy lived nearby.
