In Memory
Butch Greene died on May 27, 2013. He was a resident of Ponce Inlet, Fla. Butch was on the Amherst varsity soccer and squash teams and was an avid tennis player. He worked for many years for Provident Life & Accident Co. in Chattanooga, Tenn., where he was a vice president and head of the life insurance department. Butch moved to Florida in 1989 and worked for the Newport Group, continuing in the life insurance business and living in Heathrow, Fla. He retired in 1999.
Butch was a trustee and graduate of Baylor School in Chattanooga. He developed rheumatoid arthritis at a fairly early age but was able to still live an active life. At the time of his death he was president of the Coronado Shuffle Board Club in New Smyrna Beach, Fla.
Butch is survived by his wife, Anne Doane Greene, a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, whom he married shortly after graduating from Amherst. He is also survived by a daughter, Suzanne G. MacLean of Midlothian, Va.; a son, Michael of Marietta, Ga.; and four grandsons (the older two graduating from the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech), of whom he was immensely proud.
Butch and Anne traveled extensively throughout the world, but Australia was Butch’s favorite place to visit. Butch was my roommate senior year at the Alpha Delta Phi house. For the past 10-plus years Tina and I have spent much time with Butch and Anne in Florida, including a trip to New Mexico and one to Chattanooga, Tenn. We treasure the good times we had together and miss him greatly but still enjoy doing things with Anne.
