Word only recently reached the College of the death of Charles Stender in January 1990.
Charlie came to Amherst from Webster Grove, MO. As a freshman he lived in Morrow, joined Psi Upsilon and chose to major in English. Everyone who came to know Charlie was captivated by his easygoing nature, wit and ability to turn a phrase. As secretary for Psi Upsilon, his ingenious minutes of Gote meetings rendered obsolete the standard motion to "waive the reading of the minutes." His humor showed from the frivolity of the Reverend at Prom Weekend's Mock Chapel to the occasional use during rushing of a double entendre pseudonym to lend an air of lightness to an otherwise hectic period. Always interested in music, Charlie participated in Glee Club and the DQ during his undergraduate years.
After graduation, Charlie entered Navy OCS in Newport, Rl, graduated as an ensign and shipped out of San Diego on the USS Montrose. He remained a Californian from that time forward. He retired from the Naval Reserve in 1986 as a commander after 23 years of service. In civilian life, Charlie wrote for our 25th Reunion Book that "I have held numerous civilian jobs in aerospace companies, banks, Federal civil service, State of California and High School districts." Since 1987 he worked as a security consuItant for McDonnell Douglas in Southern California.
Geography made it difficult for Charlie to return to Amherst to share good times with classmates at Homecoming or Reunion. It is sad to contemplate that none of us will ever again get to enjoy being in the company of Charlie Stender. It leaves a void.
To his children, Charles D. Stender III and Stacy Elaine Stender, and to all his family, the Class extends its heartfelt condolences.
