Ross Chace '62 died December 31, 1996 from liver failure.
Ross came from an Amherst family, his father and two uncles graduated in the twenties. At Amherst, Ross enjoyed all that the College had to offer. Active in Psi Upsilon, his stint in the US Marine Corp platoon leader corps program created enjoyment for pledges and brothers alike during pledge periods. Ross dabbled in hockey and soccer but was a four year stalwart in lacrosse.
Rice Leach, who was Ross's roommate at Psi-U, recalls the things they did together in Amherst, New Jersey, and Kentucky. "In addition to all the college and fraternity exploits, we went to each other's homes, met each other's parents, and saw our lives away from campus. Ross was someone you could count on and with whom you could share major events in your life. He was part of my learning the way things are and I will miss him."
With a degree in economics, Ross entered Harvard Business School, graduating in 1964. He then began a career in international banking and finance. Unfortunately for many of us, this career choice made visits with Ross more uncommon than we would have liked. Stints with Bankers Trust and American Express led to forming his own firm, HR Chace and Company. From there, Ross moved to Kuwait, and was division head, Commercial Bank of Kuwait, corporate and international banking, the position he held when Ross last visited Amherst for our 25th Reunion.
Iraq's invasion of Kuwait found Ross in Berlin, but his wife and two-year old daughter were seized and held hostage for several terrifying months---a deeply troubling time for Ross, emotionally and financially. At the end of the Gulf War, Ross tried to pick up the pieces, finally moving to Jacksonville, FL, in 1992. At the time of his death, he was managing director of Eaupure Servicing, Ltd, a water filtration and purification business. Ross is survived by two children from his first marriage, Anne Larkin and Dan Chace, and a daughter from his second marriage, Claudia Chace.
Ross was planning on attending our 35th Reunion. His voice was too early stilled and we shall miss him. The Class extends its sympathy to his children.
