Foreign (olive) oil and “sleeping with the enemy”

Dependence on Foreign Oil: A Study of Baetican Olive Oil in the Roman Economy is one of many past thesis titles that the classics department lists on its website. Here are three others: Sleeping with the Enemy: “Foreign” Wives in the Hippolytus and the Medea; Three Latin Love Poets and the Objects of Their Desire; and Ancient Greek Quarrying: A Provenance Study of Limestone from the Palace of Nestor with a Historical
Survey of Ancient Techniques.

Center stage

The theater and dance department builds its performance season around the senior projects of its majors. This year, in addition to Chimps, those projects include:

  • BelReso Curvus, a performance piece and video installation, conceived and directed by Philip Dupont ’12
  • <3 In the Age of the iPhone, a “folk musical about the perpetual loss of paradise,” with script and original songs by Forrest Hudes ’12
  • Skin and Hide, created and directed by Grace Booth ’12 with set design by Kalan Rutstein ’12,  which explores the classic fairy tale of Beauty and the Beast
  • Going Public, a play by Elias Johansson-Miller ’12 about “the beloved and broken United States public education system”
  • The Freedman’s Son, by Benjamin Colon ’12, a tragedy set in Ancient Rome
  • The Event, by Ian Reichert ’12, which follows an inexperienced actor who is ill-prepared for his performance
