Dear Amherst Community,
We are saddened to report that His Holiness the Dalai Lama has had to cancel his U.S. visit next month, including his visit to Amherst. He office has released the statement below:
His Holiness the Dalai Lama arrived in the United States earlier this week for a medical evaluation. Upon completion of the evaluation, the doctors have advised that His Holiness take complete rest. As a result, His Holiness will be returning to Dharamsala next week and will not be able to visit the United States next month. We deeply regret cancellation of the visit and apologize to everyone who have worked so hard in organizing the visit as well as to the public who have been looking forward to the visit. We thank everyone for their support and understanding and would like to consider rescheduling the visit in the future.
I know you will join me in sending him our best wishes for his recovery. He is deeply interested in the issues he was scheduled to discuss with us here and we hope he will be able to re-schedule soon.
To the members of the Amherst College community,
It is a special privilege to share with you the news that on October 23-25, we will welcome to Amherst His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama will be the guest of the Mind & Life Institute, which has a long and close relationship with His Holiness. The University of Massachusetts Amherst, Smith College, and our College are collaborating with the institute to host events during his visit. We will host at least one event on campus for Amherst College students, faculty, staff, and alumni; a public event will be held at UMass on October 25. As soon as we have more information about these events, we will share it with you, which we expect to be this summer.
It is particularly exciting that this visit will correspond with our Homecoming Weekend, and we are informing our alumni of this visit now as well. You can read the Mind & Life Institute’s announcement here.
