Gregory S. Call
May 24, 2011
I am pleased to inform you that the Board of Trustees has voted to appoint Gregory S. Call as Acting President of the College, effective July 1, 2011. Greg graciously accepted the appointment.
Greg, a mathematician who works in the field of arithmetic geometry, is currently Dean of the Faculty and the Peter R. Pouncey Professor of Mathematics. He joined the Amherst faculty in 1988 and has served the College as chair of the department of Mathematics and Computer Science, as Dean of New Students, and for the past eight years as Dean of the Faculty. Greg has also served on the Committee of Six, the Committee on Educational Policy, the Faculty Committee on Admission and Financial Aid, the Committee on Priorities and Resources, the Committee on Academic Priorities, and the Advisory Budget Committee, which he chaired.
Greg’s appointment enables a seamless leadership transition from Tony Marx to Greg to the 19th President of Amherst College. Greg’s leadership will allow the Presidential Search Committee to continue its work confident that it can take the appropriate time to select an exceptional 19th president from what is an extraordinary pool of candidates.
I hope that you will join the Board in thanking Greg for his willingness to serve the College in this most important capacity.
