Kevin Conway

Kevin J. Conway is the Managing Partner of Clayton, Dubilier & Rice (CD&R), where he has been a partner since 1994.  In addition to sourcing transactions and leading a range of strategic initiatives on behalf of the firm, he has chaired the firm’s Investment Committee since 2001.  CD&R is one of the oldest and most experienced private equity firms in the world.  Founded in 1978, the firm is currently investing its eighth fund ($5.0 billion).  CD&R has managed the investments of more than $12 billion in 45 U.S. and European businesses representing a broad range of industries.  The firm is noted for its operating expertise and drives its returns through leading substantial improvements in the businesses in which it invests. CD&R’s investments span a number of industry segments with enterprise values ranging from $1 billion to $15 billion. Representative investments include Hertz, Kinko’s, Lexmark, Kraft Food Service, VWR, Scotts, and Uniroyal-Goodrich.  In describing the CD&R investment model, the Harvard Business Review observed that CD&R provides “important insights into what constitutes best practice in the ownership and governance of corporate enterprises.

Conway was born in New York in 1958.  He is a magna cum laude graduate of Amherst College, where he was a joint Political Science and Economics major.  Conway wrote his thesis on anti-trust law and received the Densmore Berry Collins Prize in Political Science.  While at Amherst College, Conway was Co-Captain of the Wrestling team and a member of the Varsity Lacrosse team.  Conway received a JD/MBA from the Columbia University School of Law and Graduate School of Business, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar.

Prior to joining CD&R, Conway spent ten years with Goldman, Sachs & Co., where he was elected a partner.  He was a senior member of the Mergers & Acquisitions Department at Goldman Sachs, advising corporate leaders and boards of directors on numerous transactions.  Conway also served as Chief of Staff of the Goldman Sachs Investment Banking Division from 1992 – 1994, as well as Global Head of Investment Banking Recruiting (1998 – 1991). 

Conway is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Graphic Packaging International (NYSE – GPK) and has served on several private and public corporate Boards.  Conway also has been involved with several charities, including serving on the Board of Directors of Our Lady of Grace Children’s Center.  He is the former Chairman and current Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Student Sponsor Partners, an organization providing educational opportunities to at-risk inner city children.  Conway is a past President of the Amherst Class of 1980 and served as Co-Chair for Major Gifts for the 25th Reunion of the Class of 1980; he is currently a Class Agent and Major Gifts Co-Chair and is a member of the Executive Committee of Lives of Consequence, the current campaign for Amherst.

Kevin Conway is married to Denise Whalen Conway (“Dee”), and they have four children:  Jack ’10, Ryan ’12, Matt ‘15, and Kate.
