2008 Amherst Baseball Milestones

TEAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Finished the season at 24-12-1 overall, marking the third highest win total in program history
  • Posted a record of 17-5-1 from Mar. 22 to May 3
  • Finished 9-3-1 at home
  • Upset then-19th ranked Keene State, 7-6
  • Went 3-5-1 against teams that qualified for the 2008 NCAA Regional Championship (0-4 against Trinity)
  • Went 8-4 in conference play to qualify for the NESCAC Championship Tournament as the No. 2 seed in the West Division
  • Defeated No. 2E Tufts and No. 1W Williams in the conference championship to advance to the finals against Trinity
  • Pitching staff finished first in the NESCAC in batters struck out looking (92), second in strikeouts (239), and third in ERA (4.32) and opponents' batting average (.276)
  • Offense finished tied for second in the NESCAC in home runs (30), third in doubles (70) and stolen bases (58), and fourth in runs scored (277)
  • Defense finished third in the NESCAC in double plays turned (30)

Head Coach Bill Thurston

  • Led Amherst to at least 20 wins for the fourth consecutive season and the 20th time of his career
  • Increased career win total to 795

  • Caught final 10 games of the season and finished with a .983 fielding percentage

    Senior Co-Captain Josh Card 
  • All-NESCAC Second Team selection
  • Had career highs in batting average (.346), runs (28), home runs (4), RBIs (16), slugging percentage (.500), on-base percentage (.429), stolen bases (12) and walks (9)
  • Finished tied for third in the NESCAC in stolen bases
  • Finished season with .991 fielding percentage (.984 career)
  • Part of the fourth winningest senior class in program history (89 wins)

    Senior Outfielder Evan Bruno
  • NESCAC Spring All-Academic selection
  • Earned Amherst's "Team-First" award
  • Career highs in batting average (.358), runs (14), hits (29), doubles (8), RBIs (19) and total bases (39)
  • Slugged .481 with a .393 on-base percentage
  • Part of the fourth winningest senior class in program history (89 wins)

    Senior First Baseman Nick Boehm
  • NESCAC Spring All-Academic selection
  • Earned "Friends of Amherst Athletics" team award
  • Slugged .486 with two home runs, six RBIs, nine runs and a .393 on-base percentage
  • Part of the fourth winningest senior class in program history (89 wins)

    Senior Pitcher Chris Edgar
  • Posted a record of 5-4, finishing his career at 16-10 with a 4.17 ERA, six complete games, two shutouts, 183.2 innings pitched, 141 strikeouts and a .278 opponents' batting average
  • Finished first in the NESCAC in batters struck out looking (22), eighth in strikeouts per game (7.41) and tied for eighth in wins
  • Part of the fourth winningest senior class in program history (89 wins)

    Junior Third Baseman Brendan Powers
  • All-NESCAC Second Team selection
  • Finished second on Amherst in runs (31), hits (48) and doubles (12), and third in home runs (5) and RBIs (28)
  • Batted .333 with a .535 slugging percentage and .416 on-base percentage
  • Batted .474 with an .842 slugging percentage in Amherst's four NESCAC Championship games

    Junior Outfielder/Designated Hitter Angus Schaller
  • All-NESCAC Second Team selection
  • Tied Amherst single-season recod for home runs (9)
  • Batted .324 and finished second on Amherst in slugging percentage (.588), RBIs (30) and runs (31)

    Junior Second Baseman Mike Neff
  • ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District First Team
  • NESCAC Spring All-Academic selection
  • Earned Amherst's "Most Improved Player" award
  • Career highs in batting average (.345), runs (16), hits (39), doubles (5), home runs (1), RBIs (14), slugging percentage (.416), walks (6), on-base percentage (.385) and stolen bases (2)
