Amherst Women Win Dartmouth-Invite; Men Place Fourth

Senior co-captain Mike Harbus placed 17th at the UMASS-Dartmouth Invitational.

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA – The Amherst College cross country teams competed at a rainy UMASS-Dartmouth Invitational this past weekend for the second race of the season. While the women’s team took home its second first-place finish in as many weekends, the Amherst men finished fourth, with nearly every returning runner improving on last year’s time at the same event.

The Lord Jeffs began the day by dominating the women’s junior varsity section with a mere 23 points, and the women running in the varsity section did much of the same. Amherst perfectly implemented its pre-race strategy of running in pairs, with junior Elise Tropiano (Plainview, NY) and senior co-captain Heather Wilson (Danvers, MA) leading the way in third and fourth place, respectively. Sophomore Sophia Galleher (Denver, CO) and senior Katie Moravec (Chico, CA) placed 10th and 11th, respectively, and were followed by sophomore Caitlin McDermott-Murphy (Newton, MA) and senior Meg Ray (Menands, NY) just five seconds later.

Just missing the 19-minute mark to finish 19th and 20th were Laura Mortimer (Jackson, MS) and junior Nicole Anderson (Kailua, HI). All eight Amherst runners finished comfortably within every other team’s top scoring runner, which was a great indication of the Jeffs’ depth and talent.

First-year Will Yochum (Goleta, CA) highlighted the men’s junior varsity section for Amherst, as he took home a third-place finish after winning the Amherst Invite the week before. In the varsity section, each Lord Jeff improved upon his time at last year’s UMASS-Dartmouth Invite, highlighted by a 12th-place time of 25:38 for sophomore Dan Murner (Crestwood, KY). Senior co-captain Mike Harbus (New York, NY) and sophomore Carlyle Eubank (Santa Ynez, CA) also cracked the 26-minute mark to finish 17th and 23rd, respectively.

Sophomore Eric Holaday (Moorestown, NJ) shaved 1:30 off last year’s time to place 31st with a time of 26:02, while junior co-captain Peter Foote (Shelburne, VT) rounded out the scoring in 45th place. Sophomore Tom Anderson (Birmingham, AL) and Steve Grigelevich (Cumberland, RI) each improved upon not only last year’s Dartmouth Invite, but also their personal records from any race.

The Lord Jeffs return to action Saturday, Sept. 22 for the Purple Valley Classic at Williams College.
