Alumni Weekend Kicks Off 2008 Men's Soccer Campaign

AMHERST, MA – On Friday, Aug. 29, the 2008 Amherst College men’s soccer team welcomed alumni back to the College on the Hill to kick off what was expected to be an enjoyable and successful weekend of soccer, socializing and reminiscing.

The weekend kicked off with the Lord Jeff alums cheering on the current men’s team as it battled both Gordon College and Eastern Connecticut State University at Gooding Field in a pair of friendly preseason scrimmages. After witnessing the Jeffs post successful results, the players of the past gathered at Amherst Brewing Company to share stories from the glory days and to update classmates and former players on the present.

On a brisk Saturday morning, both past and present players came together for the 2008 Alumni Soccer Game. With a great turnout, the alums were determined to display for the 2008 squad the tradition of Amherst soccer. Team Alumni came out with great urgency and took an early lead in the 10th minute of the game on a goal from former All-American Mike Wohl ’07, but the current Lord Jeffs bounced back and surged with three unanswered goals to hang on for a 3-1 victory in what proved to be a hard fought match.

The 2008 Lord Jeffs were excited to have a chance to play against the alumni, as it was an opportunity for them to witness the successful tradition of Amherst soccer that has been built by those who came before them. As Grayson Holland ’09 remarks, “It was great to get out there and compete with the players who have made the program as strong and as reputable as it is today.”

After the game, members of both the current team and the alumni gathered for an afternoon luncheon, providing yet another way for both groups to connect and share memories of their experiences with Amherst soccer. “The years melt away when you put on the purple and white and step onto Hitchcock Field, one of the finest soccer pitches in New England,” says Dave Wilson ’82. “It was fun for me to play with such a talented group of alums in a game marked by high spirit and competition, but also great camaraderie.”

The Amherst coaches and players would like to thank all of the alumni for such a delightful and enjoyable weekend. Your support is what drives the foundation for success of our current program. We look forward to seeing you at games this fall!
