Kai Robinson Named to Prestigious ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Team
Robinson is only the 17th Amherst College student-athlete to earn a spot on an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Team, an honor that has been bestowed since 1952. He is the ninth Amherst athlete to be named to either a First or Second Team and only the second Lord Jeff swimmer or diver to be recognized since Michael Pohorylo ’04 was named to the Third Team in 2004.
Gautam Samarth—a standout tennis player at Trinity College—earned First Team honors as the only other NESCAC student-athlete named to a 2009 All-America At-Large Team. John Kegelman—a swimmer at Johns Hopkins University—was named the Academic All-American of the Year.
Robinson, an economics and math double-major with a 3.79 GPA, claimed two national titles in 2008, when he was the obvious choice for NCAA Diver of the Year after winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. A NESCAC All-Academic honoree, Robinson was also named the NESCAC Diver of the Year as a junior for sweeping the diving events at the conference championships, a feat that he repeated this past winter as a senior.
Although he came up short of defending his national titles, Robinson earned All-America honors on both boards for placing third in the 3-meter dive and fourth in the 1-meter dive at the 2009 NCAA Championships. The Amherst standout holds the school and Pratt Pool records on both the 1- and 3-meter boards (six dives).
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
The Men’s At-Large program for Academic All-America includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis and water polo. A complete list of honorees will be posted on the CoSIDA Website.
