Men's Team

After more than 100 years of existence in which the team amassed a 631-273-1 record (History of Amherst Swimming PDFHistory of Amherst Swimming PDF), the Amherst Men’s Swimming & Diving Team enters the 2008-2009 season with high expectations. Head Coach Nick Nichols is in his eleventh season at Amherst after compiling a 75-13 record in his first ten years. As only the sixth coach in team history, Nick can look back upon a rich coaching history that includes a span of 84 years with only two coaching changes.

Among the most legendary figures in Amherst swimming lore is that of Henry “Hank” Dunbar. A 1944 graduate of Amherst, Hank held the head coaching job from 1954 to 1993, during which time he accumulated 256 wins and recorded the team’s highest finish at NCAAs, taking 6th place in 1970. In addition to his coaching position, Hank was a Professor of Physical Education and held many national leadership positions in the world of American swimming.

Hoping to add to the illustrious history of Amherst swimming is a team that returns talent and depth throughout the roster in addition to bringing in a strong first-year class. The team is just coming off an impressive finish to the 2007-2008 season, capped by a top ten finish at NCAAs that included two individual NCAA championships amidst eleven All-American performances and ten team records. This year, senior Captains Josiah Bethards, Joseph Scala, and Christian Witzke lead a deep senior class that hopes to steer the team towards one of the best seasons in Amherst swimming history.
