From a NESCAC release
AMHERST, MA - The New England Small College Athletic Conference named Amherst College senior linebacker Mike Taylor (Evanston, IL) the Defensive Co-Player of the Week this afternoon. Taylor earned the weekly honor for his role in Amherst's 13-12 come-from-behind win over Bowdoin College yesterday in the Lord Jeffs' home opener.
Taylor was Amherst's leader on a day that saw the Polar Bears make seven trips into the red zone, but emerge with just four field goals. It was Amherst's refusal to allow a touchdown that made it possible for the Lord Jeff offense to rally late in the fourth quarter for a game-winning touchdown with less than three minutes to play.
Taylor finished the afternoon with a team-high seven solo tackles, and a team-high nine assists. Taylor added 3.0 tackles-for-loss in the win, and had a sack for a loss of eight yards. Taylor's 16 tackles in a single game is the second-highest single-game total for anyone in the NESCAC this year.
After two weeks of play, Taylor ranks second in the conference in tackles with 25, as the linebacker has paced Amherst in both games. Taylor and the Lord Jeffs lead the NESCAC after two weeks in rushing defense, having allowed just 57.5 yards-per-game on the ground, and one touchdown. Additionally, the Jeffs are second in the conference in scoring defense with 12.0 points-per-game for their opposition.
Amherst will play host to Middlebury College next Saturday at 1:30 p.m., looking to improve to 3-0 for the first time since 2004.
