From a NESCAC release
AMHERST, MA - A pair of Amherst College football players earned NESCAC Player of the Week honors this afternoon in the wake of the Lord Jeffs' 20-10 win over Middlebury College yesterday. Junior quarterback Alex Vetras (Clyde Hill, WA) earned Offensive Player of the Week honors, while rookie linebacker Sam Clark (Andover, MA) was named the Defensive Player of the Week.
With yesterday's victory over the Panthers, Amherst improved to 3-0 for the first time since the 2004 season. While Vetras is the first Lord Jeff to earn the weekly offensive honor, Clark is the second Amherst player to earn the defense honor following Mike Taylor's appearance as a Defensive Co-Player of the Week last Sunday.
Vetras played a very solid all-around game yesterday, leading the Lord Jeff attack. Vetras finished the day 35-of-54 (64.8%) for 234 yards and no interceptions or sacks, while tossing touchdown passes of nine and three yards. With a 113.44 passer rating on the day, the junior quad-captain set Amherst program records for most attempts and completions in a single game.

Clark had a breakout performance against the Panthers, pulling down a pair of game-changing interceptions along with eight tackles (seven solo). In the second quarter, Clark returned his first interception 64 yards to set up an Amherst touchdown, before hauling in his second pick in the endzone for a touchback in the third quarter. Clark and the Amherst defense held Middlebury to just 10 points, after the Panthers averaged 40.0 points per game during the first two weeks.
The Lord Jeffs will take to the road next weekend to face Colby College in Waterville, Maine. Amherst sits tied with Trinity atop the NESCAC standings as the only 3-0 teams, while Colby is in a five-way tie for fifth place in the conference with a 1-2 mark.
