Player of the Week this afternoon.
From a NESCAC release
AMHERST, MA - Amherst College junior outside linebacker Jeff Katz (Cheshire, CT) was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week this afternoon for his role in a 23-13 win over Colby College yesterday. Katz's award marks the third consecutive week that a player from the Lord Jeff defense has claimed at least a share of the conference honor.
Katz transferred from Division I Lafayette College to Amherst last year, and has made an immediate impact on defense for the Lord Jeffs. As a starter in each of Amherst's four games this season, Katz and the Lord Jeffs sit in a two-way tie with Trinity College atop the NESCAC standings at 4-0.
The first-year Lord Jeff had his best game of the season yesterday against the Mules, recording eight tackles (five solo), including 4.5 for a loss. Katz had 3.5 sacks for a total loss of 28 yards, and a pass breakup in the victory.
An eight-yard sack by Katz early in the fourth quarter resulted in a safety and gave Amherst a 16-13 lead. The Lord Jeffs closed out the game without surrendering another point, holding on for the 23-13 victory. This was the fourth consecutive game to start the season that the Jeffs have allowed fewer than 14 points.
Halfway through the 2009 season, Katz ranks second in the NESCAC with 4.5 sacks in four games, trailing only teammate Edwin Urey (Quincy, MA), who has 5.0 sacks. Katz sits sixth on the Amherst ranks with 23 tackles this season, including 8.0 for a loss. He also has one interception and three pass breakups.
The Lord Jeffs will host NESCAC and Little Three rival Wesleyan University next Saturday at 1 p.m. at the 2009 Homecoming game.
