Al Wolejko, Assistant Coach

The 2012-13 season will be the second at Amherst for Al Wolejko, who brought 35 years of coaching experience to the Lord Jeffs. Wolejko was a four-year starter and two-year captain for the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts basketball team, graduating in 1972 with a major in history and minors in education and physical education. In 1994 he earned a Master of Science in sport management from UMass Amherst, specializing in collegiate coaching and administration.

Most recently, Wolejko spent 10 years as the head women’s basketball coach at Holyoke Community College, where he led his teams to four state championships and two New England Junior College titles. He also served as the head men’s basketball coach at Westfield State (1995-98) and Stockbridge College (1993-95) after a five-year stint as an assistant coach at UMass (1983-88).

Wolejko began his coaching career at Smith Academy, where he led the boys basketball team from 1976-83. He also spent two years as the boys head coach at Northampton High School, where he earned Western Massachusetts Division I Coach of the Year honors in 1992. Wolejko has received numerous coaching honors throughout his career and has worked at several summer basketball camps.
