AMHERST, Mass. – One hundred Amherst College student-athletes have been named to the NESCAC’s 2012 Winter All-Academic Team, the conference announced today.

To be honored, students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.35 and have reached at least sophomore academic standing. Of Amherst’s 100 honorees, 15 were also named to an All-Conference team in their respective sport.

Highlighting the All-Academic Team are three Lord Jeffs who earned NESCAC Player of the Year honors. Geneva Lloyd ’13 was named the league’s top women’s hockey player, while Jonathan La Rose ’12 earned the distinction in men’s hockey before being named National Player of the Year by the AHCA and USCHO.

Caroline Stedman ’12 was named the NESCAC’s top performer for the second time in her career and is one of two finalists for National Player of the Year. Ben Scheetz ’12, meanwhile, earned a Division III Men’s Track Athlete of the Year selection for the second time in his career after excelling during the indoor season.

Earning All-Sportsmanship honors from Amherst earlier this month were Eddie Effinger ’12 (men’s hockey), Ellen Swiontkowski ’12 (women’s hockey), Taylor Barrise ’12 (men’s basketball),Kim Fiorentino ’12 (women’s basketball), David Kerr ’14 (men’s squash), Lena Rice ’14 (women’s squash), Mike O’Connor ’12 (men’s swimming & diving) and Susannah Rudel ’12 (women’s swimming & diving).

Members of the All-Sportsmanship Team exhibit respect for themselves, teammates, coaches, opponents and spectators. They display sportsmanship not only as a participant in their sport but also as a spectator and in their everyday lives. Through their positive actions and example, these student-athletes inspire others to adhere to the quality of sportsmanship that the NESCAC and the NCAA endorse.
